I've heard Dr. Brown's Bottles mentioned a lot, which makes me suspicious that they are maybe paying people for positive reviews. Has anyone tried them and are they really any different than regular bottles?

Yes, we've tried them and the anti burp technology seems to help keep air bubbles out. Each bottle comes with many parts which makes assembly a bit complicated. But for my voracious eater, they seem to work as well as any other bottle. She's 4 months old now and has trouble taking from any bottle.
